THE NIGHT THE POWER WENT OUT

That evening, after dinner, the family gathered around the patio table, yet no one was truly looking at one another. Dad was catching up on the news, Mom was replying to messages, and the two kids were each glued to their phones.

Suddenly, the power went out, plunging the house into darkness. Grandmother slowly lit an old oil lamp, set it in the middle of the table, and brought out a pot of hot tea alongside a plate of mooncakes. With the screens no longer glowing, everyone began to see each other more clearly.

Grandmother gently asked, “How was school today, kids?” One of the grandchildren hesitated before confessing to a bad grade. Hearing this, Dad set his teacup down and shared that when he was young, he used to skip school out of fear of getting scolded. The whole family burst into laughter.

A while later, the lights flickered back on, but no one rushed to pick up their phones. They stayed right there, chatting away from one topic to the next, until the moon had climbed high into the night sky without anyone noticing.

As it turns out, we don’t lack time for one another. We simply miss the moments slow enough to look into each other’s eyes, listen, and touch the quiet joy of just being together.
