On Mid-Autumn night, two siblings sat on the doorstep, reading a page from a book long kept in their grandmother’s drawer. The moonlight fell upon the illustration of the Guardian Lion (Lân), with its wide eyes and curved horns. The younger one asked, “If the Guardian Lion looks so fierce, why does everyone love welcoming it into their homes?”

The older brother leaned down, re-reading the passage, and explained: Long ago, the Guardian Lion was a fierce monster that struck fear in everyone. But transformed by love, it stopped causing harm and instead became a guardian of peace. Once a source of fear, the Guardian Lion became the very thing people looked forward to each year.

Out in the yard, the breeze rustled through the bamboo grove, and the scent of rain-washed earth lingered in the air. The two siblings looked at each other, shared a moment of quiet, and gazed far off toward the moon.

Perhaps within each of us lies a bit of the Guardian Lion—moments of anger, and pain we have yet to name. Yet anger does not need to be crushed; it simply needs a space safe enough to settle. And when embraced with love rather than met with retaliation, anger naturally gives way to compassion.
